Miriam R. Cohn was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She earned her B.A. in 1943 and her M.S.S.A. in 1945 from the University of Pittsburgh. She joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1951, after serving for two years at the Wilder Foundation (St. Paul, Minnesota). She was a professor of social work, focusing on group social work, and director of the Minnesota Resource Center for Social Work Education, which she helped found. Social work education was first initiated at the University of Minnesota in 1917 via the Training Course for Social and Civic Work program within the department of sociology. The program consisted of five years of course work, resulting in a Master's degree, with the first awarded to Mary Agnes Meier in 1918.
